Depo-Provera

Depo-Provera Lawsuit Attorneys

Representing Clients in Pittsburgh & Nationwide for Select Cases

If you used Depo-Provera, the injectable birth control shot, at least twice and were later diagnosed with meningioma, the prescription drug might be the direct cause. Legal action is being formed against Pfizer, the manufacturer of Depo-Provera, and Robert Peirce & Associates, P.C. is on the case. Our attorneys are currently investigating the link between Depo-Provera and meningioma and hearing from people who want to file an injury claim or join a class action lawsuit that could form against the Big Pharma company. We are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but can help with select Depo-Provera cases nationwide.

Call (844) 383-0565 now to schedule a free consultation and see if you can file a Depo-Provera lawsuit.

What is Depo-Provera?

Originally developed in 1992, Depo-Provera is an injectable contraceptive that uses the synthetic hormone progestin called medroxyprogesterone acetate. The medication inhibits ovulation and thickens cervical mucus to greatly reduce the chances of pregnancy. When used as directed, which usually requires the “birth control shot” to be administered once every three months, it is reportedly 99% effective.

Why is Pfizer Being Sued Over Depo-Provera?

In the past, Pfizer has faced legal action over Depo-Provera’s strong link to bone density loss. However, current litigation is being formed due to the drug’s link to meningioma. Multiple prominent medical studies, including one published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) and a French study that looked at more than 108,000 medical records, have found that Depo-Provera use may increase a woman’s risk of developing meningioma. Some data shows that between two and four administrations of Depo-Provera, which is administered as an injectable medication once every three months, may be enough to cause a 500% increase in the risk of developing meningioma, specifically intracranial meningioma.

Legal complaints against Pfizer have alleged that the Big Pharma company knew or reasonably should have known that Depo-Provera could cause meningioma yet did not warn users and medical communities. Product liability laws may also be enough to justify legal action against Pfizer, regardless of the manufacturer’s knowledge of Depo-Provera’s link to meningioma.

What is Meningioma?

Intracranial meningioma is a rare form of brain tumor that forms on the meningeal tissue of the brain. If it forms on this tissue along the spinal cord, it is called spinal meningioma. Depo-Provera has mainly been linked to intracranial meningioma.

Although meningioma is usually noncancerous, it can be extremely dangerous. As the meningioma grows or moves, it can put pressure on the brain, nerve cells, and blood vessels in the affected area, possibly causing a variety of serious symptoms.

Symptoms of intracranial meningioma include:

  • Seizures
  • Speech impediments
  • Memory problems
  • Vision, hearing, or smell loss
  • Migraines
  • Balance issues or dizziness

In severe cases, intracranial meningioma can cause fatal complications due to brain damage as it builds pressure on the brain. Once meningioma has been identified, medical experts often recommend surgical removal, which will carry its own risks of unsafe complications.
