Injuries Caused by IVC Filters
IVC (inferior vena cava) filters were first introduced to the market in 2005. They are small, cone-shaped devices that are designed to catch embolisms (small blood clots that move from the deep veins in the legs to the heart and lung area). Embolisms can be treated using blood-thinning medication, but some patients are allergic or otherwise unable to take blood thinners. Thus, C.R. Bard and Cook Medical developed this device to provide an alternative method of treatment.
However, since the introduction of IVC filters, numerous patients have reported severe and even life-threatening complications. The manufacturing companies knew of the side effects and complications that could result, and failed to provide warnings to consumers and healthcare providers. They are now facing several lawsuits regarding injuries caused by IVC filters.
Complications regarding IVC filters include:
- Migration
- Perforations
- Filter fractures
- Punctures of the heart or lungs
The filters have been known to break apart into fragments and travel through the patient’s body. Furthermore, many times, the filter is difficult to take out, requiring expensive and dangerous surgery. Even when filter remains intact, it has been reported to break loose and migrate, puncturing organs and causing immense and life-threatening internal damage. The complications of IVC filters are now being realized, and the manufacturers must be held responsible for hiding the truth about this defective product.
