What You Need to Know About Implanon

Implanon is a birth control device manufactured by Merck. It works by releasing a gradual amount of etonogestrel, a birth control hormone, through a small rod implanted in a patient’s upper arm. While it was designed to be a safe and effective method of birth control for up to 3 years, it has resulted in several types of injuries.

Patients using Implanon have suffered:

  • Ectopic pregnancies
  • Unplanned pregnancies
  • Device migration
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Infections
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Thrombosis

In some cases, the device migrated through the pulmonary artery to the chest wall. Other times, it was expulsed from the body, or implanted so deeply that it was irretrievable. The risk of ectopic pregnancy (where the embryo grows outside of the uterus) increases in patients using Implanon. When marketing the product, Merck failed to warn consumers of many of these complications, leading to several lawsuits against the company for negligent and fraudulent marketing practices. The FDA has since required Merck to include warnings of all known side effects of Implanon in its marketing campaigns.
