Why is Camp Lejeune Water Dangerous
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted a safety study of the water at Camp Lejeune. It found that two water treatment plants were circulating contaminated water, likely for the entire time that they were in operation. The water was contaminated with several forms of volatile organic compounds or VOCs. With this discovery, it became clear that possibly millions of people between 1953 and 1987 were unknowingly exposed to unsafe VOC levels at Camp Lejeune.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes VOCs are carcinogens or likely carcinogens, depending on the specific type. Repeated or heavy exposure to VOCs can cause chronic and/or terminal illnesses.
Diseases and health complications linked to the VOCs in Camp Lejeune’s water include:
- Bladder cancer
- Higher risk of birth injury
- Higher risk of miscarriage
- Infertility
- Kidney cancer
- Leukemia
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Parkinson’s disease
- Prostate cancer
- Scleroderma or systemic sclerosis
According to the ATSDR study, VOC levels at Camp Lejeune could sometimes exceed 400 times the EPA’s minimum “safe” exposure limit. Also, one study found that people who stayed at Camp Lejeune were 300% more likely to be diagnosed with certain types of cancers and diseases than people who spent no time there. This study and others like it have convinced health groups, legislators, and the American people that Camp Lejeune’s water has undoubtedly caused tens of thousands of people to suffer lifelong illnesses or untimely deaths throughout the decades.
Camp Lejeune Justice Act Benefits
Signed by President Biden, the Camp Lejeune Justice Act makes it easier for eligible parties to file compensation claims against the federal government.
Specifically, the Camp Lejeune Justice Act:
- Prevents the federal government from using specific defenses that are often used in toxic exposure lawsuits.
- Allows claimants two years from the Act’s signature date to pursue a claim, which overrides any previously expired statute of limitations.
With the Camp Lejeune Justice Act’s benefits, you can now file a claim and demand compensation based on your unique losses and suffering. Importantly, you can file a Camp Lejeune Justice Act claim even if you already received separate benefits for illnesses caused by Camp Lejeune toxic water exposure, as provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
