On April 2, 2025, Hertz, one of the largest mobility companies that also owns Dollar and Thrifty rental brands, completed an investigation into a data breach that affected its consumers in October and December of 2024. Specifically, Hertz used a third-party vendor, Cleo, to transfer files. Cleo’s system, which stored Hertz’s customer’s personal information, was hacked and exposed Hertz’s customers confidential information to unauthorized parties. While the specific information may vary depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name,
  • Date of Birth,
  • Address/Contact Information,
  • Social Security number,
  • Driver’s license information,
  • Passport information,
  • Other government identification numbers,
  • Credit card information,
  • Information regarding workers’ compensation claims,
  • Medicare or Medicaid identification, and
  • Injury related information associated with vehicle accident claims.

As a result of the breach, Hertz posted a notice of the data breach on its website and began notifying impacted individuals via letter on April 11, 2025.
